George Washington's domestic policy during his first presidential term supported Alexander Hamilton's financial plan, which included the first national bank and tax on whiskey. During the French Revolution, he kept a neutral policy despite previous assistance from the French in the war for independence but did establish a navy. His major presidential policy was initiated when he stepped down form office after two terms.
Elected from the Federalist party, Adams passed the Alien and Seditions Act of 1798 in response to the XYZ affair which allowed him to deport any foreigner who is a threat to society. His Sedition Act also made it a crime to publish any false information about the government or its officials. Prior to this, Jay's Treaty between the U.S. and Great Britain's peaceful trade relations led to ship harassments from the French which resulted in the XYZ affair.
As a Democratic-Republican, Jefferson held a strict interpretation of the constitution but decided to purchase the Louisiana territory which doubled the size of the U.S. and would ensure the expansion westward. With rising tensions in Europe, Jefferson remained neutral by establishing the Embargo Act of 1807 which restricted all European trade from American ports. This was a failure because it not only hurt European economies but the American economy as well.
Also a Democratic-Republican, the recharter for a second national bank was unconstitutional but financial issues from the War of 1812, which was ended by the Treaty of Ghent rendered it necessary. With the success of the War of 1812, the U.S. became recognized and led to the diminishing force of the Federalist party against Madison.
Democratic-Republican; Monroe's Era of Good Feelings focused on expansion in Florida with the Adams Onis Treaty between Spain and the U.S. and strains over Missouri but the Missouri Compromise proclaimed it to enter as a slave state and Maine as a free state. The policy to prohibit slavery in future states north of the parallel 36°30′ was also issued. Monroe's Doctrine main principle was to proclaim the U.S. free from European
